by their course deadline (contact the office if you do not remember
your deadline) will be Suspended until they have completed the
course - that means they will not be allowed to work on ACTRA gigs!
NEXT COURSE DATE: Saturday, October 18, 2008 in both
Calgary & Edmonton
Only Apprentice Members who do not already have an Educational
Credit listed with ACTRA must pay to attend, the cost is $160.50 and
is payable within one week of registering for the course. All other
members can take advantage of this professional development
opportunity FOR FREE.
Please contact ACTRA to register.
Please be aware that if you cancel your registration less than 72
hours in advance of the course, you will be charged a $50
non-refundable deposit so that we can recover our cost for running
the workshops.
The course covers details such as Member and Union obligations; it
covers how to properly fill out audition sheets, work reports,
vouchers and contracts; it covers the Collective Agreements; it
talks about becoming a Full Member and ACTRA Fraternal Benefits
Society; it talks about Casting Directors and Agents, etc.
The course is a National initiative that all of the ACTRA branches
have undertaken (we were actually among the last branches to get on
board). It offers an educational credit to Apprentice Members who do
not already have one (members who have one have either invested a
great deal more than $160.50 in educational programs through the
former ACTRA Approved providers, or have a degree in Fine Arts with
a focus on performing), which is where we derive the fee from: a
work permit as a Principal Performer on a Film/ TV production is
$260.00 - given that we also have to rent a room
and equipment as well as pay an honorarium to instructors, we feel
that this is fair market value for this course. Who doesn't have to
pay to attend: Parents of members who are Minors, Apprentice Members who have an
educational credit, Full Members.
This course is absolutely necessary; the vast majority of our
members don't know how to properly fill out the ACTRA paperwork and
miss out on earnings because of it. If you take nothing else away
from the course, that section in particular is very important. We
also spend an unfortunate amount of time sending out disciplinary
charges and penalties to members who contravened the most
fundamental member obligations; this course gives us the ability to
highlight those issues before members get in over their heads. |
